Give Them Training Wheels

I'm a big proponent of training my company on marketing best practices.  I host internal training classes, send out the invites, and if people show up then they show up.  If they don't, then I send them the cliff notes afterward.  I offer one-on-one coaching.  I invite myself to their meetings so we can debrief afterward on presentation skills, collateral, next steps, etc.

I shove marketing best practices down their throat.  And you know what?  They listen.  Sometimes they even ask for more.  If I don't know how to train them I come to you ... my SMPS network of geniuses and get your guidance.

I'm essentially giving my co-workers the training wheels to be part of our marketing efforts.  They may not all tweet but they value our Twitter outreach.  They may not all be public speakers but they help pull together the stories.  They may not all be amazing LinkedIn networkers but they understand how our sales team uses the platform.  They may not all write articles but they will review them before they are submitted to editors.

And as they continue to build their marketing muscle I'm constantly encouraging them that they are doing a great job and we will continue to practice our efforts.  Because marketing never stops.  The forward momentum we build has to be maintained.  And I will always offer up training wheels of best practices so the ride gets smoother each time we try.
